December 2, 2016 marked the 41st Annual Holiday Parade on the Central Coast presented by Wells Fargo and San Luis Obispo Downtown Association. It’s the most wonderful time of the year for families to bundle up and enjoy watching the “Dashing Through the SLO” Parade making many spirits bright. There were nearly 100 Christmas decorative floats, vehicles, marching bands, dancers, and singers rocking the holiday spirit.
Elyse Goodwin a local new mother was excited to share her tradition with her newborn, “I have been a part of the SLO parade for over 10 years and I have always brought my friends and family but now that I have extended my family I am so happy to share this fun holiday tradition now with my little one.”
The parade was taken place downtown San Luis Obispo beginning on Chorro at Palm and ending on Higuera and Nipomo. Throughout the long march thousands of spectators brace the cool weather and drink hot chocolate getting into the holiday spirit. Local parade announcers were stationed over the few blocks ensuring the safety of people crossing streets, promoting local businesses, and judging the floats. Parade entries competed for Best in Theme, Most Creative, and Most Entertaining.
Amy Steiner, Sandra Foxford, Lena Friedman, and Jacci Abram were the judges of this year’s 41st Annual Parade. The judges had a tough task deciding who the top entries were. This year’s winners were: Glacier Ice Company- Best in Theme, Central Coast Landscape Products- Most Creative, and last but not least Studio @Ryan’s American Dance-Most Entertaining.
Jacqueline Menez, a 14-year-old dancer at Studio @Ryan’s American Dance, shares her first experience being a part off the local parade, “It was super fun dancing around and getting ready for Christmas.” The 14 year-old expresses that the dance company is very diverse with all sorts of different arts of dance. Studio @Ryan’s American Dance offers tap, ballet, jazz, hip hop, funk, and much more.
“We were able dance however we wanted and that’s what made this parade so much fun” Jacqueline was able to express herself by forming her own dance and incorporating all the lessons she has taken above. Ryan Beck, owner of Studio @Ryan’s American Dance, was proudly to announce to his young dancers that they won the Most Entertaining competition.
